The Montessori Method
Montessori education is creative and practical. It encourages independence and self esteem. Each child is seen as a unique and sensitive individual to be respected and cherished.
The Montessori philosophy believes children have an ability to absorb and learn best through practical activity. It respects the child as an intelligent individual who, given the freedom to explore, will naturally acquire knowledge of themselves, their world and ways to develop and organize that knowledge. Our role is to structure experiences and resources for that discovery.
The Montessori curriculum covers the following areas:
practical life; e.g. clothes fastenings, pouring, washing and personal hygiene, cooking, sewing, good manner
sensorial; e.g. grading, matching, weight, smell, colour, developing concepts from concrete to abstract
mathematics; these activities are all practical tasks allowing the child to learn by doing and seeing
language; many tactile language resources help enhance the language rich environment we provide
culture; e.g. nature studies, animals, countries, land forms, personal time lines and the world around us
